The Chardonnay vines grown at Hunter Ridge are from the original vines brought into Australia from Burgundy by John Macarthur in 1817 and established at Mudgee. These vines are grown on their own roots and have distinctive characteristics specific to this pre-phylloxera Burgundy clone which is also known as Pinot Chardonnay (Pinecone Chardonnay). The bunch size of this clone tends to be small with small berries and low yielding.
